BOLSTER GRANULAR 4-4-4 + Iron with mycorrhizae is a granulated professional turfgrass and landscape fertilizer.

From the leaders in soil health and plant care, Suståne has developed a combination product that deploys the best components for Rapid Plant and Turf Establishment. BOLSTER GRANULAR 4-4-4 + Iron contains a powerful, synergistic blend of mycorrhizae, growth factors, and plant biostimulants proven to promote rapid root development, superior growth, and protect roots from drought, stress, transplant shock, pathogens, and soil contaminants.

Recommended Use:

BOLSTER GRANULAR 4-4-4 + Iron is designed for all turfgrass and landscape plantings. Bolster G is during core aerification of golf course greens and other fine turfgrass. It is also used in the soil profile during new greens construction and landscape bed preparation as well as in container mix substrates. Bolster G must be incorporated into the root zone to achieve the full benefit.

BOLSTER GRANULAR 4-4-4 + Iron

25 years of applied research have consistently proven Suståne Natural Fertilizers to be the leader in plant establishment, soil physical improvement, and biological disease suppression. Suståne Triple Four is made from a thorough, aerobic composting process unlike any other organic fertilizer on the world market today. This basic Suståne contains 3% organically chelated iron plus all major and minor elements known to be essential for plant photosynthesis. This is an 80% Slow Release Nitrogen ratio natural fertilizer rich in humic substances, is foolproof, and will not cause “fertilizer burn” to plant materials. To improve on Basic Suståne’s unsurpassed plant establishment, the following components have been added:

Bolster4 4 4mycorrhizae sustanemicroscope

VA mycorrhizae

Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi: Glomus intraradices, Glomus etunicatum, Glomus deserticola, and Glomus clarum. Guaranteed a minimum of 3.52 propagules per g. Mycorrhizal presence equates to “Healthy Soils”. It affects available soil nutrition, the physical structure of the soil, and the number of and types of other organisms present in the soil. “Mycorrhizae” refers to the species of fungi that form beneficial associations with plants. It is a “Facilitator” that brings nutrients to plant roots, exudes “Glomalin” to improve soil structure, and actually fill up available entry sites along roots to inhibit pathogens from attacking. Mycorrhizal fungi are a critical component of healthy soils.

Suståne® 5-2-4 with Iron is a granulated professional turfgrass and landscape fertilizer.

Description:

Suståne 5-2-4+Fe is the original Suståne formula first created in 1988. As this was the first Suståne product available on the market, it soon became the standard organic evaluated by numerous universities. Michigan State University, Cornell, University of Rhode Island were three of the first research facilities to discover that Suståne 5-2-4+Fe was highly suppressive of common diseases affecting cool season grasses including root Pythium, Necrotic Ring Spot, Red Thread and to a lesser extent various patch diseases. More organic fertilizer studies have been run utilizing Suståne 5-2-4+Fe as the standard against which all other “organics” are compared.

Recommended Use:

Suståne 5-2-4+Fe is the all-purpose turf food and is available in either Medium Grade (lawn and fairway applications) or Fine Grade for putting greens. Suitable for use on all turfgrass types providing quick green up followed by long lasting slow release organic nitrogen. Use where even growth and color is needed for six to eight weeks.

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Granular Inoculant from Suståne®

Label Spec Sheet MSDS
Mycorrhizal fungi are used to treat disturbed soils that have been depleted of beneficial microorganisms.

Mycorrhizal fungi are used to treat disturbed soils that have been depleted of beneficial microorganisms. Mycorrhizae are major facilitators in soil microbiological processes. The addition of mycorrhizal inoculants has a positive effect on microbial populations by providing an environment for organisms that aggregate the soil, convert matter to available plant nutrients, and suppress pathogens, which are generally present in higher populations when mycorrhizae are not present and when soils are compacted and anaerobic.

Background on Mycorrhizal Fungi:

Mycorrhizal fungi are living organisms that provide several benefits for their host plant. These organisms are entirely dependent upon their symbiotic relationship with plants for survival and consequently provide a number of services and materials to assure their host plant’s survival and productivity.

Suståne utilizes four species selected for wide range of ecosystems and climates: Rhizophagus irregularis, Rhizophagus clarus, Septoglomus deserticola, Claroideoglomus etunicatum. Suståne guarantees 200 spores per gram. Mycorrhizae are available from Suståne in 11 lb. and 40 lb. bags or custom blended into Suståne fertilizers.

Key Benefits of Suståne Mycorrhizae:

  • Efficient use of water and plant nutrients: Upon colonization of the host plant, mycorrhizae begin to significantly increase the plant’s access to the soil resource pool by extending (literally miles of additional) microfilaments known as hyphae throughout the rhizosphere (root zone). These threadlike structures extract both soil moisture and plant nutrients from an enlarged area and from minute sites that are inaccessible to bare roots drawing water and nutrients from a volume of soil that is 40 to 50 times greater than what the plant alone can access.
  • Enhanced Plant Immune and Defense System: Mycorrhizae provide access to soil nutrients such as phosphorous, calcium, sulfur, ammoniacal nitrogen, and zinc. These specific plant nutrients are key to the plant’s formation of immuno-defense compounds such as alkaloids, terpenes phenols, and flavinoids. When these compounds are present at sufficient levels in a plant it has the capacity to fend off pests and pathogens.
  • Improved Soil Structure: As mycorrhizal hyphae develop they excrete a glue-like substance called “glomalin”. Glomalin is an important substance found in well-aggregated soils that creates additional porosity, which allows for increased movement of air, water, and beneficial soil organisms throughout the soil profile. Many of the common root pathogens actually prefer waterlogged and compacted soils (anaerobic conditions). Conversely, an oxygen-rich (aerobic) soil environment created by well-aggregated soils favors many of the beneficial microorganisms that assist plants in soil mineralization (of plant nutrients) and help in the suppression of plant and soil pathogens.

For Superior Nutrient Uptake and Growth Promotion

Bolster® MycoBio™ from Sustane® is a blend of endo mycorrhizae species and beneficial bacteria, with humic acid and compost to support the proliferation of soil microorganisms.  Bolster MycoBio is used for inoculating soils and growing media with beneficial microbiology for improved nutrient cycling and to amend soil to improve seedling success and promote vigorous plant establishment.

Key Ingredients and Benefits of Bolster MycoBio:

Sustane mycorrhizae under a microscope

  • Mycorrhizal fungi are living organisms that provide several benefits for their host plant. These organisms are entirely dependent upon their symbiotic relationship with plants for survival and consequently provide a number of services and materials to assure their host plant’s survival and productivity.  Suståne has chosen 4 specific strains of endo mycorrhizae that are most likely to form positive relationships with the majority of plant types you grow.  Upon colonization of the host plant, mycorrhizae begin to significantly increase the plant’s access to the soil resource pool by extending (literally miles of additional) microfilaments known as hyphae throughout the rhizosphere (root zone). These threadlike structures extract both soil moisture and plant nutrients from an enlarged area and from minute sites that are inaccessible to bare roots drawing water and nutrients from a volume of soil that is much greater than what the plant alone can access.
  • Bacillus is a genus of bacteria that are commonly found in soils.  The microorganisms help facilitate the cycling of nutrients, transforming them into plant-available forms for uptake by plants.  These microorganisms can also protect against certain soil-borne diseases, resulting in more resilient plants.
  • Humates are naturally occurring, complex organic molecules that are formed as a result of the decomposition of plant and animal material which has been compressed for millions of years deep below Earth's surface.  Humates have numerous benefits, including being a rich source of carbon,  improving soil structure, and increasing root growth.

Greenhouse/Transplant Production:

For seed starting, transplant production, and/or initial planting of rooted cuttings, thoroughly incorporate into potting media using 1 - 2 lb. per yd3 (.65-1.5 kg m3). Increase to 3 lb. per yd3 (1.95 kg m3) when using propagation trays with < 20 cm3 cell volumes.  For smaller planting volumes, use 1.5 tablespoons per gallon (2.6 g per L) of potting media, or 1 cup per 2.8 ft3 (128 g per .26 m3) loose-filled bag of media.

Landscape and Garden Use:

Indoors, use 1.5 tablespoons per gallon (2.6 g per L) of the potting mix when establishing or replanting houseplants.  Outdoors, apply ½ cup per gallon (64 g per 3.8 L) of fill dirt when planting shrubs or trees. In garden beds, use just 1 teaspoon (2.5 g) of material in each transplant hole for small flower vegetable transplants. Alternatively, apply in-furrow using 1 lb.-2 lb. per 100 ft2 (1-2 kg per 100 m2) of soil when planting vegetables, fruit, or flower gardens.

Why Fertigation?

Water dispersible fertilizers greenhouse fertigation, hydroponics, foliar feeding, planting of field crops, and turf

Fertigation provides more precise control of plant-feeding. There are many systems and approaches for growing plants, and each has its benefits. Wherever water is provided through irrigation, additional nutrients can also be delivered. By precisely dosing plants with only the nutrients they need as they grow, there is reduced potential for nutrient loss in the growing system. That can mean better control of plant growth, greater nutrient use efficiency, and less waste.

Commercial nurseries and greenhouses grow plants with diverse nutritional needs. While a typical soil or constructed potting mixes can provide all of the nutrients a plant needs to grow, supplementing those matrices with different concentrations of key nutrients, particularly nitrogen, can improve the rate and quality of plant growth.

Turfgrass managers and landscapers sometimes need quick greening. In the green industries, people who produce and manage turfgrass know that color and thickness are key qualities demanded by many customers. Balanced nutrition also helps keep grass healthy and more tolerant of foot traffic and other environmental stresses.

Fertigation Rates and Application:

Suståne Hi-N 12-0-1 WDF in use with delivery systems

When diluted correctly, this product can be applied to plants through high volume, wide bore sprayers, and piped irrigation lines. Pre-filtering is required to prevent clogging of narrow gauge lines and emitters. To minimize risks of clogging and biofouling, install lines with the widest bore that is practical and use the highest flow rates that work with that irrigation system. Be sure to flush all lines with water after each fertigation and fully clean lines on a monthly basis.

For Hydroponics & Greenhouse Fertigation

Use up to 2 lb. of Suståne WDF per 100 gallons of water for finished solutions with up to 300 PPM of N. To do so, prepare a base concentrate by thoroughly mixing 0.5 lb. powder per gallon of water (or 60 g per liter). This base concentrate can then be diluted into 50 to 150 volumes of water to obtain working solutions of various strengths. Working solutions can be applied regularly depending on crop demand and growing conditions.

For Field Crop Starter Fertilizer

For in-furrow and side-dress drench applications, apply up to 40 lb. of Suståne Hi-N WDF per acre in no less than 200 gallons (45 kg per hectare in no less than 780 liters of water) of solution. To do so, mix up to 0.2 lb. of powder with each gallon (or 25 g per liter) of water while filling the mixing tank. Ensure powder is fully dissolved before application. Apply within 4 hours of preparation. Rinse applicator tank and pump lines thoroughly with water immediately following application to avoid clogging.

For Foliar Feeding

For foliar applications to fruiting crops, apply up to 3 lb. of Suståne Hi-N WDF per acre using 100 gallons of water (3.5 kg per hectare using 1000 liters of water). To do so, prepare a base concentrate by thoroughly mixing 0.3 lb. of Suståne Hi-N WDF per gallon of water (36 g per liter). This base concentrate is then diluted 1:10 with water in the spray tank to prepare the working solution for foliar feeding. Apply 100 gallons per acre (or 1,000 liters per hectare) one to four times per season. Apply the working solution within 4 hours of preparation. Rinse sprayer thoroughly with water immediately following application to avoid clogging.

For Turf

For turf applications, use 0.9 lb. of Suståne Hi-N WDF per 1,000 ft2 using 2 gallons of water (500 g per 100 square meters using 7.8 liters of water). To do so, mix in 0.45 lb. Suståne Hi-N WDF per gallon of water while filling the applicators reservoir tank. With constant agitation, apply 2 gallons of working solution per 1,000 ft2 (7.5 liters per 100 square meters) of turf to provide 0.1 lb. of N per 1,000 ft2. Apply the working solution within 4 hours of preparation. Rinse sprayer thoroughly with water immediately following application to avoid clogging.

Application rates and use instructions:

Application rates of Suståne water-dispersible fertilizers should be made based according to a crop’s nutritional needs and tolerance for salt stress. WDF should be diluted in water and mixed well prior to application. For best results, add package contents to fresh water in clean containers with mixing as described below. The preparation of a homogenous solution is critical to successful and consistent fertigation. It is highly recommended that growers prepare a base concentrate of Suståne’s WDF in a bucket of water and then mix the concentrated solution into a larger volume of reservoir water to ensure proper mixing prior to dispensing. Prepare a concentrate of 0.5 lb. of powder per gallon of water in your reservoir. Add the powder slowly while stirring until the required amount has gone into solution. Use a pre-filter screen on the reservoir's injector line. After the concentrate is fully mixed, let the solution sit for 15 minutes before placing the injector hose into the reservoir.

Make sure the intake end is not touching the bottom of the reservoir and allow the injector to pump all but 2% of the concentrate volume to avoid uptake of any contaminating grit that might rapidly clog intake screens. After fertigation, the remaining concentrate may be fully diluted and injected directly as part of the initial flush. Apply fertigation solutions ONLY when temperatures are above 50oF (11oC) and below 85oF (30oC). Commercial users should check the pH and EC of the prepared fertigation solutions to make sure they are within acceptable ranges for their specific crops.

    Suståne is always reliable
Suståne is the one fertilizer that once tried, you won’t change because it reliably provides excellent and predictable results. Suståne is organic in origin and being fully composted, you end up with a product that promotes the soil microbiology as much as the plant needs and you get the input of all of the required trace elements. Since I began using Suståne I have never had more than 1% fusarium attack on my turf and I have not had to apply fungicides.

    Suståne on organically grown vegetables
Since 1992 I have tried most of the other organic fertilizers on my Redland farms over the years and I know to stay with Sustane on my organic vegetable crops. Having tried most all of the other organic fertilizers - for my time and for less money, my yields are three times greater with Sustane.

The micronutrients in Suståne organic fertilizers help soil and plants remain healthy. Suståne has an advantage over organic fertilizers made from oilseeds and animal meals; it has no foreign seed content that might germinate, nor any potential to attract insects or rodents. Suståne is clean to handle and stores well.

We had a wonderful response this year with our greens and tees on the Suståne program. There is something about your material that really improved the soil biomass and sustained our bentgrass with good health and excellent playing conditions… I am now even more confident that using Suståne has helped me provide nice putting surfaces for our club and given me a renewed confidence in that I am going the right direction.

This past fall we had a crop of poinsettias that were in extreme decline. We were considering terminating the crop when as a final effort we decided to make an application with BOLSTER. I would have to say that the turnaround was like a miracle. Literally overnight, we saw a response in the plants. Not only did we save the poinsettias, but also they were some of the finest blooms we have ever seen here. In all my years, I have never seen a product work as well as BOLSTER. It is now part of our regular nutritional program.

I have been growing using the Sustane 8-2-4. Since I've been using it the quality of my crops has improved and every week customers compliment me on how beautiful the produce looks and tastes. I started out with a small order just for myself as I only have about 5 acres. I let a friend try a bag and was with the results also and told told other people. So when I place my next order I have to purchase bags for 6 other people as well. I farm organically and would recommend your product.

The Olympic event was a huge success, everyone was extremely pleased…I used quite a bit of the 5-2-10 and Bolster (the Bolster liquid was awesome on my Paspalum). Also for some new Zoysia jump zones on sand I incorporated the Sustane’s BOLSTER Granular 4-4-4 into the sand. These areas turned out to be brilliant.

  • Taichung, Taiwan

About middle December of last year, I planted a flower tree (Tibouchina semidecanda Cogn) in my front yard. I applied Sustane 4-6-4 from the local distributor here in Taichung to nurse my tree. In fact, it was my first time to use Sustane fertilizer and I am so surpirsed of its effects. When I brought the flower tree home, it was about 10 flower buds. After one month of applying Sustane 4-6-4 it was 40-50 flower buds! And about one week ago, when I was hoeing up weeds, I found earthworms where I did not find any before. Attached is the picture of my flower tree. It suffered from huge temperature change and weird rain and similarly light degree typhoon wind one week ago. But now it is blooming again!
